Traffic is at a standstill on the northbound M3 in Surrey after a lorry carrying hot Tarmac crashed.
The Tarmac spilled across all three lanes and the hard shoulder when the lorry overturned, and is now setting.
Several vehicles were involved in the accident, between junction three for Bagshot and Lightwater and junction two for the M25 interchange.
The Highways Agency said special equipment was being brought in to remove the Tarmac.
The southbound carriageway is open, but police said traffic was moving slowly and drivers were being advised to avoid the area.
Police, the ambulance service and the Highways Agency were at the scene. There are no reports of serious injuries.
The northbound carriageway is expected to be closed for several hours following the accident, which happened at about 0945 GMT.
"It will be a very big clear-up operation," said a police spokeswoman.
Highways Agency spokesman James Wright said: "It has cooled quite quickly and will have to be physically scraped off using specialist equipment.
"Because of the amount involved, it will have to be done more than once so it will be a reasonably lengthy operation."
Diversions are in place for traffic heading northbound but Mr Wright said it was not yet known how long the motorway would be closed.
